What is Vietnamese egg coffee?

Vietnamese egg coffee is exactly how it sounds! It’s a mixture of egg yolk, condensed milk and coffee that makes a deliciously sweet caffeinated treat. It’s usually enjoyed with a spoon.

Equipment

  • 4 small mugs
  • Electric whisk
  • Bowl

How to make Vietnamese egg coffee

Step 1 – Mix eggs and milk

Separate 4 egg yolks and put into your bowl with the condensed milk. Pour in 1tsp of vanilla extract and whisk until foamy. It should be light in colour.

Step 2 - Prepare your glasses

For an iced Vietnamese egg coffee, pop some ice in your glass

For a hot egg coffee, place your glasses standing up in hot water. This keeps the coffee warmer for longer.

Step 3 - Brew your coffee

Pop the NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® Espresso Intenso pod into your NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® coffee machine and watch the delicious liquid pour into your mug. If you’re making an iced egg coffee, make sure the coffee is pouring directly onto the ice cubes.

Step 4 – Spoon on the egg mixture

Add the egg mixture on top of the brewed coffee and garnish with a sprig of mint. Serve with a spoon so you get all of the coffee-egg deliciousness and enjoy immediately!

Where does egg coffee come from?

The sweet and thick egg coffee comes from Vietnam! Specifically, it originated in Hanoi in 1946 and was created by Nguyen Van Giang. He crafted this due to milk shortages and rations, causing him to get creative with condensed milk.

When is best to enjoy Vietnamese egg coffee?

Vietnamese egg coffee is sweet, thick and delicious – it’s like dessert in a cup! For this reason, it would be great to enjoy after dinner as a sweet treat. But, of course, it can be enjoyed at any time of day.
